COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill/Evanston) netted a game-high six goals as Saint Michael's edged Pace University, 13-9, in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at Duffy Field at the Doc Jacobs Sports Complex. The Setters mounted a comeback with five-straight goals to begin the fourth quarter, but the Purple Knights escaped, scoring the final two goals of the match to claim the victory.
For the Setters (7-7, 4-6 NE-10), Rob Cornetta (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had a team-high five goals and added an assist for a six point game, while Ryan Gregory (Bethpage, N.Y.) posted two goals and an assist. Jake Sheppard (Melbourne, Australia) tallied a goal and an assist and James Hammell (N. Caldwell, N.J.) recorded a goal as well. In net, Tim Matheis (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made seven stops, including four in the first quarter.
For the Purple Knights (9-6, 8-2 NE-10), junior Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) netted three goals and handed out an assist for four points, while classmate Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) collected two unassisted goals and an assist. Freshman Brian DiPisa (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) had career-high and game-high three assists and sophomore Bryan Zaremba (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) recorded a goal and an assist. Junior netminder Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) made six saves before bowing out with an injury and freshman Zach Jandl (Brookline, N.H./Vermont Academy) made two saves down the stretch in his absence.
Saint Michael's came out firing with six-straight goals, including three in the first quarter, with three-of-the-six coming from Lazarus and two from Boerma. Pace got on the board six minutes remaining in the half with Cornetta scoring one of his team-high five tallies.
The Purple Knights went back up 7-1 with less than two minutes left on a goal from sophomore Jake Previte (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset). Cornetta and Gregory answered back for the Setters with back-to-back goals in a span of 15 seconds to cut the lead to 7-3 at halftime.
Lazarus continued his dominance as he scored three goals in the third quarter, including a man-up goal midway through the period; to help give Saint Michael's its largest lead at 11-4 going into the final quarter.
The Setters, however, kept coming and scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter to shorten the lead to 11-9 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Cornetta lead the charge with two consecutive goals, one being a man-up goal, in the first three minutes of the quarter. The Purple Knights sealed the deal with goals from Boerma and Agostinelli in the final minutes to prevail 13-9 over Pace.
Saint Michael's out-shot the Setters, 40-29, including 13-5 in the first frame and 12-7 in the third quarter. Pace won the turnover battle, giving up 19 turnovers to the Purple Knights' 22 on the afternoon.
Men's lacrosse will now travel to Le Moyne College to face-off with the Dolphins in the NE-10 Semifinals at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4.
