SHELTON, Conn. - Senior Sam Finkelstein (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) and sophomore John Barry (South Boston, Mass./Deerfield Academy) both rattled off four points for the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team in an 8-1 victory over Post University on Saturday in the Sports Center of Connecticut. The Purple Knights are 13-8-2 after finishing off a three-game season sweep of Northeast-10 Conference scheduling partner Post, which is 2-19-1. Saint Michael's is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.
Barry and Finkelstein both had one goal and three assists, while junior Jack Ouellette (Arlington, Mass./Dexter School) and first-year Thomas Flack (Toronto, Ontario/Saint Michael's Buzzers) recorded two goals each. Flack became the program-record 11th first-year this season to tally his first collegiate goal. Senior Eric Salzillo (Johnston, R.I./Boston Bandits) and first-year Ethan Hendrickson (Budd Lake, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) pitched in a goal each, and sophomore Tim Decker (Liverpool, N.Y./Canterbury School) had 29 saves.
Sophomore William Santangeli (Oakville, Ontario/Saint Mark's School) and first-year Sel Narby (Huntington, N.Y./Connecticut Junior Rangers) both contributed two assists. Salzillo was 11-for-17 on faceoffs, Flack went 9-for-15, and first-year Niall Foster (Newmarket, N.H./Walpole Express) finished 9-for-18.
First-year Jake Raleigh notched the lone goal for the Eagles while classmate Evan Lugo added the assist. Senior Christopher Harris was 5-for-7 from the dot as first-year Brandon Brown had 41 saves in net.
Ouellette had back-to-back tries early on that Brown stopped before Ouellette put Saint Michael's ahead at 6:47, tallying during a power play through the help of Barry and Finkelstein. The Purple Knights held another power-play opportunity at 7:05 during which Brown did not allow their four shots through. Nearing the 10-minute mark, sophomore Tyler Hackett's bid nicked off the post. Barry notched the second Saint Michael's goal at 14:40 after touches by Santangeli and senior Nathan Foice (Essex, Vt./The Winchendon School). Decker closed out the period with three saves during an Eagle power play.
During the first 1:31 of play in the second period, Decker picked up three saves before Ouellette registered his second goal to give Saint Michael's the 3-0 advantage at 4:50, with Foster assisting. Flack had a chance around the eight-minute mark that hit the pipe. The Eagles held a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:39 during which Decker picked up saves on all three shots. Salzillo added to the lead at 17:04, with Finkelstein and Narby assisting, before Flack netted his first college goal 1:13 later. Narby registered the lone assist.
After receiving a pass from Lugo, Raleigh got his shot by Decker to give Post its first goal of the game at 1:13 of the third stanza. Hendrickson answered back at 3:35 to extend the Purple Knight lead to 6-1, as Barry and Santangeli assisted. Finkelstein added another tally at 6:10 during a power play off Barry's assist. Flack notched his second goal of the game at 17:49 with assistance from Finkelstein and first-year Matt McGlynn (Walpole, Mass./New Hampton School).
The Purple Knights finish regular-season play next weekend when they host Franklin Pierce University for a two-game NE10 series, starting Friday at 7:05 p.m.
