BOSTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team fell at 12th-ranked University of Massachusetts at Boston on Friday evening, 5-0, during Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena. The Purple Knights are now 8-16 overall and 5-12 in the league, while the Beacons, who are tied for second in the nation in scoring, improved to 18-4-2 and 11-4-2.
Senior Eric McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) made 30 saves for the Purple and Gold, which was only outshot by a 21-19 margin during the first two periods by a squad ranked 12th by both U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and D3hockey.com.
First-years Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass./Boston Bandits) and Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C./Chilliwack Chiefs) both had a goal and an assist for UMass Boston, while juniors Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) and first-year Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass./Boston Bandits) also scored. First-year Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) made 22 saves.
The Purple Knights were narrowly outshot during the first period, 12-11, with Sitterley recording the lone goal at 8:59. The Beacons held another edge, 9-8, in the second stanza, with Kuhn and MacIntyre scoring 1:44 apart in the opening 4:28 to make it 3-0. Saint Michael's took four of the next five shots during a scoreless remainder of the period. Miller tallied 6:42 into the third period before Daniel added a power-play marker with 4:34 to go.
Saint Michael's completes its season tomorrow at nationally-ranked Babson College at 4 p.m. The Beavers are ranked 13th by D3hockey.com and are receiving votes toward the USCHO poll.
