Geary's hat trick propels Purple Knights to 5-1 victory at the University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Senior captain Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) recorded his first career hat trick during a five-goal third period, as the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team bested the University of New England, 5-1, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action on Saturday at the Harold Alfond Forum. With the win, the Purple Knights improve to 6-12 overall and 3-9 in the league, while the Nor'easters fall to 5-13 and 3-10.

Geary added an assist to go along with his three goals, while sophomore William Côté (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial Prep) and first-year Kevin Altidor (Montreal, Quebec/Millbrook School) both had a goal and an assist for Saint Michael's. Senior Mike Dizgun (Montreal, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 16 stops to pick up the win.

First-year Sam Vikich (Vancouver, British Columbia/Delta Ice Hawks) scored for the University of New England, while sophomore Colby Drost (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Niagara) turned aside 30 shots.

After a scoreless opening period, Geary and Altidor found the back of the net on short-handed chances 4:44 and 5:04 into the second frame, respectively, to put the Purple Knights up, 2-0. Geary added his second of the contest at 6:30 before Côté made the game 4-0 just 28 seconds later. Geary completed the hat trick with a power-play goal that came with 1:19 to play in the second period. Vikich denied Dizgun's shutout bid with a marker on the man advantage with 4:23 left in regulation.

Saint Michael's returns home next Friday, when it hosts Saint Anselm College at 7 p.m.
