Purple Knights keep pace with No. 9 Amherst through two periods during setback
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team remained deadlocked with nationally-ranked Amherst College after two periods before the Lord Jeffs pulled away for a 4-1 win in a non-conference tilt on Saturday at Cairns Arena. With the loss, the Purple Knights fall to 4-12 overall, while Amherst, which is ranked ninth nationally by D3hockey.com, improves to 10-4-2.
Saint Michael's received a second-period goal from sophomore William Côté (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial Prep), while senior goaltender Mike Dizgun (Montreal, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) denied 37 shots.
Sophomore Mike Cashman (Abington, Mass./Boston College HS) notched a goal and an assist for Amherst, while juniors Christopher Finch (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Saint Paul's School) and Andrew Kurlandski (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and first-year Patrick Arena (Mount Hermon, Mass./Taft School) each finished with a goal. First-year Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass./Belmont Hill) made 19 saves.
After a scoreless first period, Côté tallied with 5:09 remaining in the second frame on an assist by senior Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) to lift Saint Michael's to a 1-0 advantage. Cashman evened the contest when he scored 2:02 later, leaving the score 1-1 after one. Arena and Finch converted markers 1:59 and 3:13 into the third frame, respectively, to put the Lord Jeffs on top, 3-1. Kurlandski netted the contest's final goal with 3:46 left to play in regulation to seal the victory.
The Purple Knights return to the ice on Friday when they travel to face the University of Southern Maine at 7 p.m.
