Purple Knights' three-game unbeaten streak snapped in 3-1 loss at UMass Boston
BOSTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped on Friday, falling to the University of Massachusetts at Boston, 3-1, during an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest in the Clark Athletic Center. The Purple Knights, who kicked off a weekend road trip to the Boston area, slipped to 3-7-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the league. The Beacons are 6-6-2 and 2-5.
Junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 38 stops for the visitors, while classmate Petr Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Unicov) tallied midway through the third period.
Senior Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill./Valley Jr. Warriors) turned in a goal and an assist for UMass Boston, while senior Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, Mich./Walpole Express) and sophomore Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y./Green Mountain Glades) also found the back of the net. Freshman Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers) had 28 saves.
Dizgun had 18 stops in the first stanza, yielding only Tejchma's marker at 11:53. UMass Boston scored once in each period, with Wyman's winner at 2:43 of the second coming on a power play, and Grinhaus pushed the hosts' advantage to 3-0 at 7:06 of the third before Soustal countered 3:37 later. Senior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery) and freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) provided the assists.
At 14:26, the Purple Knights earned a five-minute man advantage, but both of their shots during the power play were denied by Scola while looking to chip into the deficit.
Saint Michael's heads to Babson College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
