MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Purple Knight men (4-13-3, 3-10-3 ECAC East, 2-1-1 NE-10) surrendered to a 7-2 decision at Middlebury College (11-4-4, 7-3-4 NESCAC) on Saturday afternoon. Saint Michael's is 1-2 in hockey action this week.
For Saint Michael's, freshman Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) recorded his first collegiate goal, while senior Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa./N.H. Junior Monarchs/University of Vermont) tallied his eighth goal of the season in the third period.
Evarts opened the first period with a power-play goal less than two minutes into the game, as he was assisted by sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) and junior Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts). Middlebury responded with two more goals two close out the period.
The Panthers controlled the second frame with three more goals, before Geverd answered back with the Purple Knights second and final goal just over a minute into the third period. Junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) and freshman Alex Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School) were credited with the assists.
Freshman netminder Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) was unable to stop two additional Panthers' goals and ended the game with a total of 30 saves.
The Purple Knights will return to Cairns Arena this coming weekend, hosting Skidmore College on Friday night at 7 p.m., and celebrating their "Senior Day" the following afternoon for a men's and women's ice hockey double-header against Castleton State College.
