MANCHESTER, N.H. - Men's ice hockey (4-11-3, 2-8-3 ECAC East, 2-1-1 NE-10) dominated play on Tuesday as they shutout Southern New Hampshire University (3-11-3, 1-3-2 NE-10) in Northeast-10 conference action at the Penmen's Ice Den. The win moved Saint Michael's into the third seed in NE-10 standings.
For the Purple Knights, freshman Alex Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School) tallied the winning goal, while junior Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) recorded two goals in the contest. Sophomores Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) and Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) each tallied a goal. Freshman Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) protected the net with 32 saves in the shutout.
Saint Michael's took the only lead they would need immediately in the first period, as Davidson capitalized on a power play drive within the first three minutes of action. Assists were provided by junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) and senior Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa./N.H. Junior Monarchs/University of Vermont).
In the second period, the Purple Knights tallied two more goals to separate themselves from the Penmen. Sheehan netted the first puck just 0:39 into the period, assisted by Earle and Geverd. Earle followed up with a goal of his own midway through the frame, having been set up by MacKinnon and senior Paul Nannicelli (Walpole, Mass./Boston Junior Bruins).
MacKinnon set the Penmen at a four-goal deficit when he tallied his seventh goal of the season on a pass from Rigtrup less than a minute into the final frame. With less than three minutes on the clock, Sheehan netted the final puck of the game, assisted by senior Dave Vorozilchak (Clark Summit, Pa./Capital District Selects) and Earle.
The Purple Knights will remain on the road for their next two contests, battling the Williams Ephs on Friday at 7 p.m. at Lansing Chapman Rink.
