SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team (1-3-0, 1-2-0 ECAC East, 0-1-0 NE-10) dropped a 5-2 decision to Hamilton College (3-1-1, 2-1-0 NESCAC) in their home-opener on Friday evening at Cairns Arena. Prior to the start of the game, the 2009 Northeast-10 Championship banner was unveiled by former Purple Knight hockey greats Erik Caron '07, Chris Healey '09, Bryan Dodge '09, and Ryan Mero '09.

Purple Knights freshman Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) opened up the scoring at Cairns Arena with his first collegiate goal, assisted by classmate Dan Pelletier (Sutton, Mass./South Kent School) and senior Jean-Maxime Legare (Saint Augustine, Quebec/Restigouche Tigers). The Continentals soon took back the lead with three unanswered goals. Two minutes after the Purple Knights goal, Hamilton sophomore Brandon Broad (West Seneca, N.Y.) tied the game with help from senior Vaclav Tomicek (Liberic, Czech Republic) and freshman Andrew White (Franklin, Mass.). Vaclav then netted two goals of his own, the first as an unassisted effort and the second goal coming from senior Harry Biggs (West Newbury, Mass.) and Broad.

Before a minute had passed in the second period, the Continentals notched their fourth goal of the game. Junior Tom Chiappetta (Myrtle Beach, Fla.) netted a puck from Biggs and sophomore Bryan Kelly (Plymouth, Mass.) to make it a three-goal difference. The Purple Knights held Hamilton to eight shots on goal in the second period, while they themselves had seven scoring opportunities.

The Purple Knights were able to apply enough pressure in the third period to sink a puck in the back of the net at the ten minute mark. Junior Nicholas Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) recorded the goal for Saint Michael's with help from sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) and freshman Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades). The level of play intensified as Saint Michael's needed to sink two goals to tie the game. The Continentals quickly put the Purple Knights back in a three-goal deficit, as Chiappetta notched a reassurance goal with less than five minutes remaining, receiving a pass from senior Chris Lorenc (Clifton, N.J.)

In goal for the Continentals, freshman Calvin Bartel (Drake, Saskatchewan) recorded 18 saves, while Purple Knights freshman Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) set aside 23 shots in his first home contest.

Saint Michael's will return to Cairns Saturday afternoon as the Purple Knights host Amherst College at 3 p.m.
