SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Saint Michael's (2-8-3, 1-5-3 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10) and the New England College Pilgrims (6-7-2, 2-5-2 ECAC East) drew 4-4 in Saturday afternoon's ECAC Men's East contest at Cairns Arena.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) netted the first puck of the day, while sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) notched his fifth and sixth goals of the season. Freshman Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors) recorded his first collegiate points, as he assisted classmate Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) and MacKinnon.
For the Pilgrims, freshman Phil Moore (Lower Onslow, Nova Scotia) netted his first collegiate goal in the contest, while classmate Geoff Shewmake (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Trevor Turner (Westbank, B.C.) each tallied a goal. Senior Jonah Granath (Stockhold, Sweden) recorded the game-tying goal midway through the third period.
After winning a faceoff in the first half of the opening frame, junior Nick Sheehan (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) passed the puck off to classmate defenseman Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) who was able to connect with Earle. Earle, showing off some stick skills in front of the net waited for the perfect opportunity to slip a puck past Pilgrims' netminder, junior Aaron Harvey (Milford, Nova Scotia). The Pilgrims outshot Saint Michael's 16-12 in the period, but MacKinnon made it a two-goal difference with one second left on the clock, receiving helpers from Sheehan and Earle.
The Purple Knights wasted no time at the start of the second period to make it a three-goal game, as junior Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, Ontario/Wellington Dukes/University of Maine) connected with Jangro to give Geary his third goal of the season. The Pilgrims seemed to have found a way to get the puck passed Purple Knights' freshman netminder Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard), as they scored back-to-back goals in the fifth and sixth minute of the frame. Moore netted a puck from seniors Mark Ehl (N. Vancouver, B.C.) and Jon Globke (W. Bloomfield, Mich.), followed by Shewmake, who tallied the second point on a play from Turner and sophomore Emil Alengard (Linkoping, Sweden). With 3:10 on the clock in the second frame, MacKinnon once again sent the Pilgrim's to a two-goal deficit, as he was assisted for his second goal of the game by Rigtrup and Jangro. New Englands' Turner had an answer, however, and on a play from sophomore Jarkko Leppanen (Tampere, Finland) and senior Jeff Armando (Canton, Mass.), he closed the gap to 4-3 at the end of the second period.
The Purple Knights held their lead until after the midway point of the third frame, when Pilgrims' Granath netted a puck past Dizgun, assisted by Armando to tie the game 4-all. The next seven minutes were all action as both teams skated for the winning goal, but were unable to achieve it as the Knights headed into their second overtime of the weekend. Extra time yielded no goals and the final score was posted as 4-4. In net for the Pilgrim's, Harvey made 10 saves, while sophomore Connor Sampson (Whitby, Ontario) covered the net for the remainder of the game, setting aside 28 shots. Dizgun came up with 40 saves in the Purple Knight's contest.
Saint Michael's will return to Cairns Arena next Friday at 7 p.m. to faceoff against Trinity College, followed by Saturday's 3 p.m. home contest against Wesleyan University.
