SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - An entertained crowd got their fill of action in Friday night's 6-6 overtime battle between Saint Michael's (2-8, 1-5-1 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10) and the Saint Anselm Hawks (6-4, 4-3-1 ECAC East, 2-0-1 NE-10). No one can say a single player didn't give everything they had during the game, as the Purple Knights left 110 percent of their effort on the ice.

For Saint Michael's, junior Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, Ontario/Wellington Dukes/University of Maine), sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints), and senior Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa./N.H. Junior Monarchs/University of Vermont) posted goals in the first period. The scoring was rounded out by Belmore again in the second frame, followed by junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) and Geverd with the tying goal.

For the Hawks, freshman Timothy King tallied the first goal, while junior Coleman Noonan and classmate Paul Snell recorded the second period goals. Netting key points in the third frame were King, junior Brendan Carroll and classmate Ryan Butler.

In the opening frame, freshman Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) put the Knights on the board in the sixth minute of play as he rounded the net and found Belmore unmarked in front for a goal. One minute later, MacKinnon found the back of the net on a puck from sophomore Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School). Hawks' King was able to sneak a puck past freshman netminder Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) on a play from classmate Tucker Mullin but not before the Purple Knights tallied their third goal of the game, as senior captain Dave Vorozilchak (Clarks Summit, Pa./Capital District Selects) set up Geverd in the fifteenth minute of action.

As two dangerous plays went uncalled against Saint Michael's towards the end of the period, the frame finished with a level of intensity that was only bound to get greater as the game went on. The Hawks opened the second frame with an early goal by Noonan. Belmore answered back minutes later to make it a two-goal game once more, with helpers coming from Rigtrup and freshman Alex Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School). The Hawks brought it back to a one-goal difference midway through the second frame, as Snell netted a puck in the upper right corner, beating Dizgun's reaction time. Saint Michael's held the 4-3 advantage at the end of the period but were outshot 13-4 by the Hawks.

Saint Michael's took the ice in the final frame with the chance to take away the Hawks perfect Northeast-10 season as their level of intensity showed. The Purple Knights fought it out with the Hawks, as Rigtrup secured an unassisted fifth goal, just moments before Saint Anselm's King answered back to keep them one goal behind. Hawks' Carroll then tied the game at 5-all with just under 12 minutes remaining in play. Minutes later, the game was on the line as the Purple Knights had a four-minute penalty kill, during which the Hawks pulled into the lead on a goal from Butler. The lead was short-lived, as Geverd notched the game-tying goal with less than five minutes remaining on the clock, assisted by Rigtrup and Davidson. The Purple Knights had a power play opportunity to end the game before overtime, but were unable to capitalize.

A scoreless overtime brought the game to completion at 6-all. In net for the Hawks, junior Kevin Fairweather made 11 saves in the first period before being replaced by classmate Alex Wyse who set aside 14 shots the remainder of the game. For the Purple Knights, Dizgun held is own in net with 40 saves.

Saint Michael's will return to Cairns Arena Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. faceoff against New England College.
