SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team will look to defend its Northeast-10 Conference Tournament championship on Saturday at 7 p.m., as the fifth-seeded Purple Knights host sixth-seeded Stonehill College at Cairns Arena.
Tickets cost $6 for adults and $3 for seniors age 65 and over, students (with valid identification), and those age 17 and under, and the doors for Saturday's contest will open at 6 p.m. No advanced tickets will be sold prior to the championship contest.
Both Saint Michael's (10-15-2) and Stonehill (10-12-1) won two playoff road contests to advance to Saturday's title game. Saint Michael's won at fourth-seeded Assumption College on Saturday, 5-4, and at second-seeded Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, 4-2. Stonehill, meanwhile, won at third-seeded Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, 5-0, and at top-seeded Saint Anselm College on Wednesday, 7-4.
Saint Michael's will look to win its second straight NE-10 Tournament championship. Last year, the top-seeded Purple Knights defeated Stonehill in overtime in the Semifinals before earning the title.
Saint Michael's is led by senior Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British Columbia/Finlandia University), the NE-10 Goaltender of the Year and last year's NE-10 Tournament Most Valuable Player, and sophomore Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers), the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year. In addiiton to Bilton, seniors Bryan Dodge (Goffstown, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy), Chris Healey (Salem, N.H./New Hampshire Junior Monarchs), Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms), Brett Peryer (Peru, N.Y./National Sports Academy), and Matt Whitney (Plymouth, Conn./The Gunnery School) will play in their final collegiate contest on Saturday.
Stonehill is led by a trio of seniors. Brendan O'Brien (Briantree, Mass.) has a team-best 23 assists and 30 points, Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) has a team-high 11 goals, and James Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.), the 2007 NE-10 Tournament MVP, had a team-best six power play goals.
