COLCHESTER, Vt.- In helping Saint Michael's to the most wins in program history (12) since 1999-2000 with a Northeast-10 title on Saturday and being voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player, junior goaltender Tyler Bilton (Penticton, B.C./Finlandia Univ.) captured Player and Goaltender of the Week honors in the Northeast-10 Conference. Three of Bilton's teammates earned a spot on the honor roll for their part in claiming the first ever Northeast-10 regular season title and first Northeast-10 tournament title since 2004.
On Wednesday, Bilton helped the Purple Knights avenge a season finale loss to Stonehill with a 5-4 overtime win over the Skyhwaks in the semifinals with 26 saves on the night. In the championship versus No. 2 Saint Anselm, Bilton posted 31 saves and two shutout periods while the Purple Knights skated to a 5-1 victory over the Hawks. The final week of the season marked the fourth time Bilton had been named ‘Goaltender of the Week' in this, his first season in a Purple Knights uniform.
Also recognized on the Purple Knights squad was senior captain Erik Caron (Kanata, Ont./Smith Falls Bears), junior Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Acad.) and sophomore Patrick McGuirk (Hingham, Mass./Avon Acad.). Playing his final week in a Saint Michael's sweater, Caron tallied a goal and two assists, one of which was the game-winner to Mero 31 seconds into overtime. In addition to his overtime short-handed game-winner, Mero scored a second short-handed goal earlier in the contest to kick-start the Purple Knights comeback victory. McGuirk was responsible for two goals and one assist in the championship, scoring the game-winner midway through the second period.
