Men's basketball falls to league co-leader and nationally-regarded Assumption

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team fell to Northeast-10 Conference co-leader Assumption College, 57-41, on Tuesday in the Ross Sports Center. The Purple Knights are now 5-13 overall and 2-12 in the league, while the Greyhounds, who received votes toward this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) national poll, are 14-4 and 11-3.

Sophomore Mike Thompson (Rosedale, N.Y./Christ The King Regional) posted 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the hosts, while senior Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) added 10 points, eight boards, two assists and two rejections. Sophomore Mauri Boschetti (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who entered the game with no points in 13 career minutes, finished with eight points, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Classmate James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) dished off three assists and blocked two shots. The Purple Knights committed only seven turnovers.

Senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led Assumption with 11 points and 15 rebounds while adding six assists, and classmate Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) added 10 points, 11 boards and six helpers. Five others scored between six and nine points, while the Greyhounds converted a 51-33 rebounding advantage into a 14-3 edge in second-chance points.

Thompson's three-pointer made it 5-0 1:01 into the contest before the Greyhounds countered with the next eight points, but first-year Greg Grippo's (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prep) triple produced an 8-8 score after 2:51. Sophomore Corey Crawford's II (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) lay-up put the Purple Knights ahead by a 12-11 count before Quick's jumper sparked an 8-1 run, pushing Assumption to a 19-13 advantage. After Boschetti drained a triple to knot the game at 24, the visitors scored eight of nine prior to halftime for a 32-25 lead.

The Greyhounds' run reached 20-5 on a bucket with 12:11 left in the contest, which made it 44-29, and the Purple Knights never got closer than 10, at 48-38 when Boschetti sank a free throw with 5:53 remaining. Saint Michael's yielded only 25 points in the second half, when it trailed just 25-20 in rebounds and committed three turnovers.

The Purple and Gold heads to Le Moyne College for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday.
