COLCHESTER, Vt. – Josh Meyer, a standout scholar-athlete with more than a decade of coaching experience at all three NCAA divisions, has been named the full-time assistant coach of the Saint Michael's College men's basketball program. The announcement was made today by Saint Michael's second-year head coach, Michael Harding. Meyer replaces Nick Leonardelli, who is now working on the men's basketball coaching staff at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.
"I am very excited and honored to be a part of the Saint Michael's men's basketball program, the College's athletics department, and the greater College community" said Meyer. "I look forward to helping provide student-athletes with important team-related educational experiences, while contributing to the success of the Saint Michael's men's basketball program."
"Over the years I have learned so much about how to coach from working with Josh," said Harding, who guided Saint Michael's to its first postseason victory in four years in his first season at the helm of the Purple Knights in 2010-11. "A hardworking, intelligent, and proven recruiter, Josh is an outstanding addition to our program."
Meyer joins the Purple Knights after spending the last nine months at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he worked as the College's Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Club Sports. Before his employment at Holy Cross, Meyer spent two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Harvard University men's basketball program. He earned his Master's Degree in Education from Harvard in 2008, successfully completing the University's Teacher Education Program, and contributed to all areas of the Ivy League program led by head coach Tommy Amaker.
Harding and Meyer first worked together from 2005-07 at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., like Saint Michael's a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. Together under head coach David McLaughlin, the trio helped guide Stonehill to the NCAA Division II Final Four, and during Meyer's tenure with the Skyhawks, the team compiled an impressive 63-27 three-year record.
Prior to working at Stonehill, Meyer spent four years working as a men's basketball assistant coach at four different institutions. He was the assistant coach at Connecticut College in New London, Conn., in the 2003-04 season, an assistant coach at New York University during the 2002-03 season, a graduate assistant at Fairfield (Conn.) University in the 2001-02 season, and in 2000-01, an assistant coach with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice men's basketball program.
Meyer enjoyed a successful four-year career (1996-2000) as a member of the men's basketball program at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Meyer captained the Cardinals as a senior, and was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic Team as a junior. Meyer's teams compiled winning records in each of his final two seasons, and he graduated from Wesleyan in 2000 with a degree in economics.
Meyer has a multitude of summer camp coaching and counselor experience, including at NCAA Division I institutions Harvard, Fairfield, Duke University, the University of Connecticut, the University of North Carolina, Northeastern University and Dartmouth College. He also was the head coach of the boy's basketball program at Burncoat High School in Worcester, Mass., during the 2009-10 season. He will begin his duties with Saint Michael's immediately.
