NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team (12-13, 10-11 Northeast-10 Conference) allowed its most points in two months on Saturday in an 80-68 setback at Merrimack College.
Junior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) had a solid game for the Purple Knights with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Michael Holton, Jr. (Portland, Ore./Sunset/The Winchendon School) led Saint Michael's with 16 points, while sophomore Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
For Merrimack (13-12, 9-12 NE-10), senior Darin Mency poured in 31 points while playing all 40 minutes, while Aaron Strothers added 24 points and eight rebounds. Wayne Mack tallied nine points, six rebounds and 10 assists in 40 minutes for the Warriors.
Saint Michael's held a 23-16 lead with less than eight minutes left in the first half, but the Warriors scored the next 11 points to take the lead for good, and held a 32-28 edge at halftime.
The Purple Knights stayed close for the majority of the second half, and trailed by just three points, 69-66, following two Schilling free throws with 2:55 to go. A Mack 3-pointer on the Warriors' next possession sparked an 11-0 Merrimack run, boosting Merrimack's lead to 80-66 and sealing the win for the hosts.
Saint Michael's closes the regular season on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Saint Anselm College.
