ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team (5-7, 1-7 Northeast-10 Conference) rallied to force overtime, but dropped a 80-77 contest at the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Qua'ron Pinckney (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Benedict's Prep (N.J.) led five Purple Knights in double figures with 16 points and seven assists. Classmate Sam Cieplicki (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton (N.H.) School) added 15 points, burying 5-of-8 3-pointers. Fellow sophomore Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) contributed 14 points and 13 rebounds, freshman Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) tallied 12 points, and junior Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) notched 11 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Five players also scored in double figures for Saint Rose (8-5, 5-3 NE-10), led by Shea Bromirski's game-high 20 points. Andre Pope added 16 points, while Devin Grimes had a strong all-around game with 12 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Saint Michael's trailed 40-36 at halftime, and 54-43 five minutes into the second half before the Purple Knights rallied to take a 58-56 lead with 10:45 left in regulation. Neither team led by more than four points for the rest of the period, and the game went into overtime after Warech missed a jumper with two seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, a Cieplicki 3-pointer gave Saint Michael's a 77-74 lead with two minutes to go. Those were the final points for the Purple Knights, however, as the Golden Knights scored the final six points of the game to pull out the win.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host Le Moyne College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
