COLCHESTER, Vt. ? The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team (6-13, 4-11 Northeast-10 Conference) saw a seven-point halftime lead slip away as The College of Saint Rose rallied for an 82-77 league win on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center.
For Saint Rose (16-5, 13-3 NE-10), senior Steve Dagostino (Schenectady, N.Y.) tallied a team-best 25 points, hitting all 14 of his free throw attempts, and added 10 assists and three steals. Classmate Shanty Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added 23 points and a game-best 15 rebounds, while junior Evan Lane (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) tallied 12 points, seven boards and four blocks.
For the Purple Knights, senior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) recorded a game-high 27 points, hitting a career-best 6-of-13 3-pointers. Freshman Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) added 15 points and eight assists, senior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) notched 12 points in his 100th career game for Saint Michael's, and junior Mike Iola (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) scored 10 points.
Saint Michael's pulled out to a 38-31 halftime lead, as the Purple Knights closed the half on a 14-6 over the final five minutes. The Purple Knights still led by four, 57-53, with 8:23 left in regulation. The Golden Knights, however, then went on a 14-0 run over the next 2:30 to take the lead for good at 67-57, and the Purple Knights could pull no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. contest at conference-rival Bentley College. Saint Rose hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
