COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Men's Basketball program earned its 1,000th win in program history on Saturday with a 90-71 victory over Dowling College in the second day of the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic held at the Ross Sports Center. Saint Michael's begins the season 2-0 as senior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was named the Tournament MVP. In the day's opener, Franklin Pierce University defeated Mercy College, 71-55.
Classmate James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) led all scorers with 25 points, while Monahan chipped in 24 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Also contributing on the scoring attack for Saint Michael's were sophomore Ryan Rodrigues (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford High School) with 13 points and junior Mike Iola (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional High) with 11 points off the bench. Saint Michael's shot nearly 56 percent, including 63 percent in the second half.
For Dowling, sophomore David Seagers (Bronx N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) recorded a team-high 24 points while senior James St. Robert (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) added 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Lions forced 17 Purple Knights' turnovers while committing 14 of their own.
In the opener, freshman Jeff Manchester (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) scored a game-high 20 points as Franklin Pierce improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior Timothy Munch (Blauvelt, N.Y./Storm King Prep) contributed 17 points, while sophomore Rimas Varanauskas (Kaunas, Lithuania/The Winchendon School) added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce shot 90 percent from the free throw line, including 3-3 in the first half, and forced 19 turnovers.
For Mercy College, senior Paul Flowers (New York, NY/Hostos CC) scored a team-high 16 points, including a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line, and added 12 rebounds as the Mavericks fell to 0-2. Freshman Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) chipped in 15 points for Mercy, a team that shot just 38 percent from the field.
Saint Michael's and Franklin Pierce both ended the tournament 2-0, while Dowling and Mercy finished 0-2. Saint Michael's will next play on Tuesday, November 20 when they take on UMass Lowell at 7:30 p.m.
