Saint Michael's takes down Southern New Hampshire in season finale
COLCHESTER, Vt. - In their final collegiate games as Purple Knights, senior co-captains Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.) and James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael's Acad.) combined for 47 points to knock off Southern New Hampshire (12-15, 9-15 NE-10) on Tuesday evening at the Ross Sports Center. Saint Michael's closed out the regular season with an 8-18 overall record and 6-16 Northeast-10 mark.
In addition to 27 points from Monahan, he also grabbed 15 rebounds to surpass Michel Bonebo for 6th all-time in Saint Michael's history with 869. Finishing his career with 1,451 points, Monahan now ranks 13th in school history, passing Dick Falkenbush '67 on the night. Sorrentine leaves Saint Michael's having left his mark on the program with a school record 340 three-pointers and 1,433 career points to rank 14th, also passing Falkenbush on the night. Junior Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) also finished with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.
Following a career-high 32 points last time out versus Assumption, junior Gerald Carter (Harlem, N.Y./Marist College) led all Penmen Tuesday night with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting while the team's leading scorer, Sam Carey (Manchester, N.H./Central) was held in check with only three points and two rebounds on the night. Sophomore forward Kelly Coder (Exeter, N.H./New England College) came off the bench to drill 4-of-5 three-points and score 19 points in just 21 minutes of play for Southern New Hampshire.
Out of playoff contention, Saint Michael's ends their season at home on a winning note while Southern New Hampshire will travel to Le Moyne College to take on the Dolphins on Saturday, March 1.
