COLCHESTER, Vt-- Despite a game-high 26 points from senior co-captain Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.), Saint Michael's (6-12, 4-10 NE-10) could not stave off defeat, dropping their 11th straight contests to Le Moyne College (10-11, 8-8 NE-10) at the Ross Sports Center Wednesday night, 76-72, in overtime. Monahan, also with a game-high eight rebounds, fouled out early in overtime, as the Purple Knights dropped their second overtime decision of the year.
Leading a balanced attack for Le Moyne was senior Jonathan Joshua (Inglewood, Calif./Porterville College), who scored 15 points on four three-pointers and 3-4 from the stripe. Senior guard Jason Holmes (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) played a stiff defensive game against the Purple Knights' guards, while picking five steals to go along with 12 points and four rebounds. On the inside, sophomore forward Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) shot 6-7 from the field to register 12 points and a team-high seven boards to snap the team's three-game losing streak.
Although Le Moyne's defense proved to be pesky at times, senior co-captain James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./St. Raphael's Acad.) managed to fire 4-7 from long range for 17 points as well as four assists in the loss. Freshman Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./St. Thomas Acad.) also chipped in 12 points to round out the leading scorers for Saint Michael's.
The Purple Knights continue their home stand against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, February 2 following the women's contest for a 3:30 p.m. tip time.
