COLCHESTER, Vt. ? In a back-and-forth game at the Ross Sports Center, the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights (4-0, NE-10 2-0) topped Pace University, 93-86, behind 17 three point shots.
Senior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) scored a game-high 28 points, including 24 off the three-point shot. Sorrentine shot 9-14 from the floor, including 8-12 from behind the three point line. Freshman Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) chipped in 14 points, including 4-12 on the three-point shot. Saint Michael's attempted 36 three point field goals, just one shy of the school record. Senior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) added 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Purple Knights.
Pace University's Ryan Williams (Centreville, Va./Paul VI) led all scorers with 21 points for the Setters, while Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, N.Y./Rye) collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Pace turned the ball over just seven times during the game, while forcing 14 Purple Knights' turnovers.
The game was knotted at 40 at the half and Saint Michael's would be down by as many as seven in the second half before a three by Sorrentine would tie the game at the nine-minute mark. Pace would close the gap to one on a lay up by Williams with just over five minutes to play, but Saint Michael's would convert on another three point shot to take the lead for good.
Saint Michael's is back in action on Wednesday when they host conference opponent Merrimack College at the Ross Sports Center. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. Pace will next play on Wednesday when they travel to Franklin Pierce University for a 7:30 p.m. game.
