COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Saint Michael's College men's basketball coach Tom O'Shea has announced that sophomore Chris White (Windham, N.H./Salem) is the recipient of the 2007 Jerry Lanteri Award, honoring an exemplary member of the Purple Knights' men's basketball squad annually.
To receive the award, chosen by a committee of former players and the men's basketball coaching staff, candidates must attain an esteemed academic stature, closely resemble the ideal of the true student-athlete, and be highly regarded by fellow students for his leadership qualities, both on and off the court.
"Chris is an outstanding student-athlete who is very deserving of this award," said O'Shea, 149-137 in 10 seasons at the helm of the Purple Knights following a 16-13 campaign last season. "He made many solid contributions this year, giving the team a spark in a number of games."
White emerged as a solid role player for the Purple Knights in 2006-07. The six-foot-six inch power forward appeared in 15 games off the bench for Saint Michael's, averaging 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. White netted a career-high 12 points in an 87-76 win versus Assumption College on Jan. 11, and matched that total nine days later in a 69-65 victory at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He also posted career-best totals of six rebounds and 26 minutes played against the River Hawks.
White is the son of Scott and Barbara White. He currently sports a 3.26 grade point average while majoring in journalism and mass communications, and minoring in business administration.
The award is named after Jerry Lanteri, a 1976 honors graduate of Saint Michael's and former member of the Purple Knights' men's basketball team. Lanteri, a native of Southington, Conn., and standout student-athlete at Saint Paul's High School in Bristol, Conn., died on July 23, 1977 from injuries resulting from a car accident.
