COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's College men's basketball coach Tom O'Shea has announced that Chris Hurley (Watertown, Mass./Boston College HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will play for the Purple Knights beginning this fall. Hurley is the first member of Saint Michael's Class of 2011.
"Chris comes from a winning program at BC High, and he can make game-changing plays with his tremendous quickness and great court instincts," said O'Shea, 149-137 in 10 seasons as head coach of the Purple Knights. "We like to play up-tempo, and Chris can definitely get the ball up the court quickly and find the open man. We are looking forward to having him join us at Saint Michael's."
"My wife, Cindy, and I are really excited to have Chris in a Purple Knights' uniform," said Joe Hurley '81, Chris's father. "Saint Michael's is a great school, with terrific academic standards, and it is a wonderful community to spend four years of college in. We are very happy he will be playing for Coach O'Shea in a strong program coming off a solid year."
The five-foot-eight-inch Hurley was the starting point guard for Boston College High School the last three seasons. During that span, BC High compiled a 60-9 record, including a perfect 25-0 season this past winter, as the squad won the Massachusetts Division I State Championship with Hurley as co-captain. Hurley was named to the Boston Globe Super Team and the Boston Herald Dream Team this past season, and earned All-Scholastic honors from both newspapers as well. In addition, Hurley guided BC High to three straight Catholic Conference Championships, and was named the Catholic Conference Co-Most Valuable Player this past season.
Hurley averaged 11 points, seven assists and three steals per game as a senior, as BC High won its first state championship in 90 years. In the finals against Holy Name, Hurley tallied 18 points, eight steals and seven assists. Also a two-time soccer all-star and All-Scholastic honoree, Hurley played forward on the Division I State Championship soccer team at BC High as a sophomore.
Saint Michael's went 16-13 last season, the program's first winning campaign since 2000-01, and earned its first postseason victory in six seasons before falling in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals.
