ALBANY, N.Y.- The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team was defeated by the College of Saint Rose, 76-62, in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinal game on Monday evening in Albany. Junior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers) scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven boards.
For the Golden Knights (20-8), Steve Dagostino scored a game-high 22 points, five assists and four steals, while Shanty Robinson poured in a 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 boards. Saint Rose shot 47 percent from the field and they were 15-of-16 from the stripe.
For the Purple Knights (16-13), junior Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers) had a team-high 18 points, including 11 in the second half. He also posted a team-high seven rebounds. Junior James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael) recorded 12 points in the loss for the Purple Knights. Saint Michael's struggled from beyond the arch, going 8-for-29 in the game.
Saint Rose began the game scoring the first eight points of the game before Monahan sunk a 3-pointer with 16:15 on the clock for the Purple Knights' first points. With the Golden Knights up 10-3, Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) got Saint Michael's within two points after five straight points.
The Purple Knights hung around with defense and with 3:50 remaining in the half, Sorrentine and Cayole hit back-to-back 3-pointers to even it at 25-25. However, the Golden Knights finished out the half on a 12-3 run and took a 37-28 lead into halftime.
Steve Dagostino led all scorers with 11 first half points and Monahan led the Purple Knights with seven first half points.
Saint Micheal's could never recover from the late, first half run from Saint Rose as they never could cut the deficit under 10 in the second half. The Golden Knights outscored the Purple Knights 40-24 in the paint and had 12 points off of Saint Michael's turnovers.
The Purple Knights finish their season with 16-13 overall record.
