HANOVER, N.H. - In a field that features seven 2018 NCAA Championship qualifiers, the Saint Michael's College men's golf team is one of 11 American squads separated by only 10 strokes following day one of Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Fall Invitational on Monday at the Hanover Country Club. All five Purple Knights broke 80 for a team 10th among 13 schools with 303 shots, within eight strokes of second place.

SAINT MICHAEL'S LEADERS

  • Junior Matt Johnson (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)
    • 2-over 72, tied for 12th
    • 2 strokes outside top 5, and 4 shots off the leader
    • Third consecutive season-low round

    • 74, tied for 21st
    • Third consecutive career-low round
  • Senior Tucker Buteau (Gorham, Maine/Tilton School)

MEET FACTS

  • The Purple and Gold is 10th among 13 schools with 303 strokes, and ninth out of 12 varsity teams.
  • All five Saint Michael's competitors broke 80 in the first round, matching a feat turned in the second round at the same meet last fall.
  • The 303 strokes were the Purple Knights' fewest since the second round of the same event last year, when they came within one stroke (289) of a school record.
  • Field included seven of 10 qualifiers for 2018 NCAA East Region Championship. Purple Knights bested Concordia (N.Y.) College, the ninth seed at regionals, by two shots while trailing No. 2 seed Le Moyne College by just three strokes.
  • First-round leader Université Laval (280), based in Quebec City, Quebec, won the Canadian University/College Championship as recently as 2017.
  • Only 10 shots separate two second-place teams from the 12th-place squad.
