COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's field hockey team (2-11, 0-5 NE-10) took a 3-0 loss against #2 UMass Lowell (15-0, 5-0 NE-10) at Duffy Field on Saturday, holding the national powerhouse River Hawks to less than four goals for only the third time this season.
For UMass Lowell, senior Lizzy Ales (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) notched the first goal 12 minutes into the game. Saint Michael's junior goalie Jackie Stacey (West Windsor, Vt./Woodstock Union (Endicott)) dove for the ball as River Hawks senior Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) flipped a pass to Ales, who found the empty cage for the easy score. Later in the half, Macy netted her league-leading 20th goal off a penalty corner, assisted by junior Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane Regional).
Saint Michael's fended off the UMass Lowell attack for most of the second half, until senior Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) dribbled through the defense and blasted in an unassisted goal in the 66th minute.
Stacey made a game-high 10 saves for Saint Michael's, upping her saves total to 27 in two appearances this week. Freshman goalie Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass./Harwich) stopped two shots for the River Hawks, who held a 21-2 shot advantage over the Purple Knights.
Saint Michael's returns to home action against Merrimack next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
