COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team will open the 2009 season this weekend, as the Purple Knights travel to Shippensburg, Pa., to take on two nationally-ranked teams in the Lady Raider Classic. Saint Michael's will play ninth-ranked Mansfield University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and take on third-ranked host Shippensburg University on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Saint Michael's, led by 11th-year head coach Carla Hesler, is coming off of an 11-8 season a year ago. Hesler, who needs 13 more wins to match the program record of 127 held by Saint Michael's Hall of Famer Anne Noone Adams, returns a squad that features seven seniors, including four of the top five scorers from last season.
The 2009 Purple Knights will be led by senior captains Kate Higgins (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Kaitlin Koffink (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown Area). Higgins started all 19 games on defense last season, while Koffink is the team's leading returning scorer from last, as she tallied six goals and 13 points a season ago.
