COLCHESTER, Vt. - The No. 6 ranked Saint Michael's College (6-2, 6-2 NE-10) won its second straight conference game by the score of 1-0 over Franklin Pierce University (3-6, 3-5 NE-10), Thursday afternoon on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights out-shot the Ravens 16-9, with both teams having their share of opportunities in front of the net.
In the first half, Saint Michael's won the game of possessions, out-shooting Franklin Pierce 9-1. With 3:04 left in the first half, senior Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Feniwck) sent a pass right in front of the Ravens' goal where classmate Sara Fournier (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) put in her first goal of the season.
The Ravens came out of halftime strong and had a number of chances in Saint Michael's zone. With 42 seconds remaining in regulation, Ravens' junior Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass.) fired a shot that just sailed wide for the potential game-tying goal. The Purple Knights then cleared it out of their zone as time expired.
Both goaltenders had solid games in net, making a number of big saves. Senior Jordan Smalling (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) registered five saves, while freshmen Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine) set aside eight in the loss.
The Purple Knights are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 28 when they travel to play league-rival American International College at 1 p.m.
