COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team (9-10) looks to continue its amazing run on Saturday, as the fifth-seeded Purple Knights visit top-seeded University of Massachusetts Lowell (16-2) in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals on Saturday at 12 p.m. at UMass Lowell's Cushing Field Complex.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students with valid identification, senior citizens and children 12 and under.
Saint Michael's, which sat at 3-10 less than three weeks ago, won its last five games of the regular season to make the league playoffs by one game over Southern Connecticut State University. Two of those wins came in overtime, while the final two wins of the regular season were 1-0 shutouts against Bentley College and Bryant University, two of the top three teams in the regular-season standings.
In the NE-10 Quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Purple Knights avenged a pair of one-goal losses to Stonehill College during the regular season by rallying for a 2-1 overtime road victory, sending the Purple Knights to the NE-10 Semifinals for the second straight season.
The Purple Knights are led by junior Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick). Slaven, named the NE-10 Player of the Year on Wednesday, is fourth in the nation in goals per game. Her 20 goals this season are a new program record, eclipsing a record first established in 1988, and her 43 points are four away from matching the single-season program record. Slaven has netted the game-winning goal in each of Saint Michael's last three contests.
Providing support for Slaven on offense are seniors Chelsea Kimball (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) and Brittany O'Brien (Stowe, Vt./Stowe), and sophomore Kaitlin Koffink (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown Area). The trio have combined for 17 goals and 20 assists this season, and all three are in the nation's top-20 in assists per game.
On defense, the Purple Knights are led by junior Tricia McCormick (East Walpole, Mass./Walpole), an NE-10 Second Team All-Conference selection. In goal, classmate Jordan Smalling (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) has surrendered just one goal in her last four games.
UMass Lowell, meanwhile, has won 10 straight contests, and has captured the last four NE-10 Tournament championships (including a co-championship with Stonehill College in 2005). The River Hawks are led by NE-10 Offensive Player of the Year Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.), and NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year Jayne Vagenas (Harwich, Mass.).
In Saturday's other semifinal, second-seeded Bentley College (13-5) takes on sixth-seeded Saint Anselm College (9-9) at 3 p.m. at the Cushing Field Complex. Saturday's semifinal winners will meet for the NE-10 Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cushing Field Complex.
