WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team rallied for a pair of victories over Assumption College, 4-3 and 11-9, on Saturday at Rocheleau Field during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 8-27 overall and 3-14 in the league while winning on the Greyhounds' home field for the first time since 1994, as Assumption slips to 17-24-1 and 11-12-1, dropping into a tie for fourth place in the NE10 Northeast Division. The teams caps their three-game weekend series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Junior Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) had a hit, two runs, a walk and a stolen base in the opener while working a shutout ninth for his second save of the season, as he struck out two. Redshirt first-year Paul Prue (Dennis, Mass./Nauset Regional/Wheaton [Mass.]) earned his first collegiate victory by allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings, fanning three and walking one. He yielded three earned runs or fewer for the eighth time in nine appearances this season, including the fifth time in six starts. Senior Colin Brennan (Braintree, Mass./Boston College HS) worked a shutout eighth inning.
First-years Danté Moran (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Dixie Hollins) and Joe Webber (Marshfield, Mass./Bridgton Academy) went 2-for-5, as Webber scored a run, and classmate Cameron Kroeger (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) had a hit, run and walk. First-year Iset Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) added a hit, RBI and hit-by-pitch, while junior Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) posted a hit, run, RBI and steal. Classmate Sean Winthrop (Hopkinton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) dropped two sacrifice bunts.
Senior Jake Byrne led Assumption by going 2-for-3 with a run, two RBIs, a walk, a double and a home run, while classmate Quinn Moynihan was 2-for-4 with a run. Senior Kyle Chudoba took the loss after allowing three runs, but one earned, on five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Assumption got on the board in the second inning, as Byrne doubled home a run, but Allen walked and stole his second career base in the fourth before Maldonado's two-out RBI single tied the game. Saint Michael's took the lead with two runs in the sixth, with Kroeger ripping an RBI knock and first-year Anthony Azpeitia (Tampa, Fla./King) coming through with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Andrew Jaehnig's RBI double cut into the lead in the home half, and sophomore Derek Adamson followed with a single, but left fielder Winthrop threw out Jaehnig at the plate trying to tie the game on the play. Robertson's sac fly in the seventh was met by Byrne's solo home run, and the visitors continued to lead by a run, 4-3. Byrne led off the ninth with a walk, but third baseman Moran fielded a sac bunt attempt and cut down the lead runner at second. Allen fanned the next two Greyhound hitters.
Moran was 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI and two doubles in the nightcap, Winthrop was 2-for-5 with a run, and Allen had a hit, a hit-by-pitch, two runs and two RBIs. Robertson added a hit, a run, two RBIs and a walk, first-year Holden Jackman (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) picked up a knock, two RBIs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, and Azpeitia scored three runs and walked once.
Five pitchers combined on the victory, with first-year Hunter Ruiz (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) being credited with the win after tossing a shutout seventh inning. Classmate Cameron Cuellar (Seminole, Fla./Seminole) fanned two in a shutout eighth before junior Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) earned his second career save with a four-batter ninth, the team's school-record fifth save of the season.
First-year Alex Mendez (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County) allowed only two runs in the opening three frames while striking out five with five walks en route to allowing four runs. Junior Christian Devine (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) followed by yielding five runs in the next three frames, but only one was earned.
Adamson led Assumption by going 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a double, junior Trevor McQuade was 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and three walks, while classmate Hunter Tralli drove in three runs and walked twice. Sophomore Manny PegueroMelo took the loss in relief, yielding three runs on four hits in three innings.
Assumption's three-run third inning made it 4-0, but Saint Michael's scored nine of the next 10 runs over the middle innings. Allen knocked a two-run single before scoring in the fourth, Azpeitia scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, and the visitors scored five times to go up 9-5 in the sixth. Jackman was plunked with the bases loaded, Maldonado rapped a run-scoring single, and Webber and Moran knocked back-to-back RBI doubles. However, Tralli's tying two-out, two-run double capped a four-run home half, with each run unearned.
Maldonado and Azpeitia led off the eighth with consecutive walks, and Robertson followed with a two-out, two-run single. Adamson led off the home half with a single before stealing second, but Assumption was unable to push across a run. With Farris on the mound in the ninth, Moynihan beat out a bunt single with two down, but the final batter grounded into a fielder's choice.
