MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team put the potential go-ahead run on base while a ninth-inning rally fell short during a 6-4 loss at Saint Anselm College in Sullivan Park on Tuesday. The Purple Knights are 1-15 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks improved to 10-20 and 5-11.
Sophomore Sean Winthrop (Hopkinton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) was 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and double for the visitors, while senior Steven Auger (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, the 19th of his career, moving him into a tie for sixth in program history with Matt Beaulieu '10. Sophomore Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) went 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI, a double and a steal, while classmate Harry Southworth (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) ended the day 1-for-3 with an RBI, a double and a hit-by-pitch. Senior Kyle Cone (York, Maine/York) and first-year Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) both doubled, with Hopkins also scoring once and walking.
Sophomore Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) took the loss after allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on six hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out four and walked no one. Classmate Christian Devine (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) allowed one unearned run on one hit in 2.2 frames of relief.
Junior Shaine Carpenter drove in two runs for Saint Anselm, and classmate John Marculitis ended the day 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Joseph Levasseur earned the victory after yielding all four runs, three earned, over eight frames. He struck out nine and did not issue a base on balls. Sophomore Jonathan Dunn worked a scoreless ninth while pitching around trouble for the save.
The Purple Knights forged a 4-0 lead by the sixth inning, scoring single runs in four different frames. Robertson singled with one out in the first, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and came home on Winthrop's two-out single. Behind the plate, Robertson cut down a potential base stealer to end the first.
Winthrop again was involved in the Purple Knights' scoring in the fourth inning, leading off with a double before later scoring on Auger's RBI single. Hopkins and Robertson hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth to make it 3-0, and sophomore Dan Flynn (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock Regional) reached on a two-out error in the sixth before stealing second and scoring on Southworth's opposite-field double.
Farris set down 11 consecutive batters heading into the sixth, where he ran into trouble. A leadoff error, a single and a hit batsman loaded the bases before junior Max Wadington's RBI single got the Hawks on the board. Third baseman Flynn cut down a runner at the plate on an ensuing fielder's choice, but Carpenter followed with a two-run single before Marculitis and sophomore Connor Parent followed with consecutive run-scoring at bats to put the Hawks on top. Junior Dan Bodi scored his second unearned run in as many innings during the seventh.
With their team trailing by two runs heading into the ninth, Flynn and Southworth were hit by pitches to begin the inning, and a strikeout was followed by Hopkins walking to load the bases with one out. However, with the tying run at second base, Dunn induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Purple Knights visit Middlebury College tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
