COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team staged large rallies in both ends of a doubleheader with Assumption College before being swept, 11-6 and 15-8, on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights are 1-14 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds improved to 12-18 and 5-10. The teams finished up a three-game series that the hosts opened with a 7-2 victory on Friday.
Saint Michael's turned an 8-0 deficit into a three-run game during the opener, when senior Steven Auger (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) was 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI, a sacrifice fly, a hit-by-pitch and three stolen bases. Sophomore Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) batted 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a triple and a sac fly, and classmate Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) finished 1-for-2 with one run, three walks and a double. Sophomores Dan Flynn (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock Regional) and Sean Winthrop (Hopkinton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) both hit 2-for-5, with Winthrop scoring once and driving in one, while classmate Calvin Holland (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) was 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk.
As the first of four pitchers, junior Patrick Martin (Wilton, N.H./Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop/Saint Joseph's [Maine]) allowed two runs on six hits in four innings but took the loss. In three frames of relief, classmate Zack Lanzillo (Rutland, Vt./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) limited the Greyhounds to two runs in three innings while striking out five, one short of his career high.
By being hit for the 23rd time in his career, Auger matched a school record shared by David Deyo '05, Kevin Harutunian '06 and Kevin Koscso '06, and he moved into a tie for seventh in stolen bases (18) with Evan Grenier '08.
Junior Andrew Jaehnig and sophomore Trevor McQuade were both 3-for-5 for Assumption, with McQuade driving in two and Jaehnig scoring twice, while senior Jake Byrne had three hits in six at bats. Junior Tom Horstkotte earned the win after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked four.
Jaehnig and McQuade drove in runs during the first inning, and the visitors added six runs in the fifth inning on six hits, including a two-run home run by sophomore Hunter Tralli. Holland scored on a passed ball in the bottom half before Robertson lofted a sac fly, and Holland walked with the bases loaded in the sixth before Auger's sac fly made it 8-4. Robertson tripled with one down in the seventh and came around on junior PJ Jasak's (Palmer, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy/Le Moyne) groundout, and the hosts trailed by three.
Saint Michael's brought the tying run to the plate with two down in the eighth, when a double steal put Auger and sophomore Harry Southworth (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) in scoring position, but the final batter struck out. Assumption pulled away with three runs on two hits and three walks in the ninth. Winthrop's RBI knock with two down in the home half made it 11-6 and put two on base, but the tying run never came to the plate.
Southworth finished 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs, a walk and a triple in the nightcap, while Allen was 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs, two doubles and a sac fly. Auger went 2-for-3 with a run, Robertson ended up 2-for-4 with a run, a walk, a triple and a stolen base, while Flynn and Winthrop walked twice apiece. First-year Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) doubled, scored once, drove in one and walked once.
Sophomore Denis Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned, in 3.1 innings to take the loss before junior southpaw Colin Brennan (Braintree, Mass./Boston College HS) yielded seven runs, only three of which were earned, in a career-high 5.1 frames. His four strikeouts were a career high.
Jaehnig was 3-for-4 with three runs, five RBIs, a walk, two doubles and a homer, Byrne batted 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBIs and a home run, while first-year Jared Brescia was 3-for-6 with four runs and two RBIs. First-year Ben Lambert picked up the win despite allowing seven runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings, with six walks and four strikeouts, before junior Kyle Chudoba notched the save by retiring all four batters he faced.
Assumption scored three runs during both the first and second innings, with Byrne's two-run homer making it 6-0. Southworth's RBI knock in the second plated a run for the hosts, who had the bases loaded with no one out but scored no further, and Southworth tripled home three with two down in the third before Cone's RBI single back up the box made it 6-5. Three more Greyhounds scored in the fourth, but Allen's sac fly allowed Robertson, who had tripled, to cut the deficit back to 9-6, and Hopkins' RBI double made it a two-run game in the sixth.
After Jaehnig and Allen traded RBI doubles in the eighth, keeping Saint Michael's within 10-8, Assumption pulled away for good behind a five-run ninth, keyed by Brescia's two-run single and Jaehnig's two-out, three-run home run. Three Purple Knight pinch-hitters went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
The Purple Knights visit Saint Anselm College on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
