MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team struck for three home runs en route to a 13-1 Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division win over Saint Anselm College on Wednesday at Sullivan Park. The Purple Knights improve to 12-23 overall and 4-11 in the division with the victory, while the Hawks drop to 16-24-1 and 5-11.
Junior David Valley (Essex, Vt./Essex/Keene State) went 4-for-5 with a triple and an RBI for Saint Michael's, while classmate Nick Nelson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Jacob Begnoche (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) finished 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored, and sophomore George Buteau (Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) had a home run, a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Nicky Elderton (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, junior Alec Tice (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) recorded two hits, two runs and an RBI, and classmate Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs. First-year Curt Echo (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) picked up the win, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits and one earned run.
For Saint Anselm, junior Kyle Grumoli (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) went 2-for-4 with a double, while classmate Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) homered. Three others recorded a hit, while senior James Farrington (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) threw 4.2 innings and struck out five while being handed the loss.
The Purple Knights took an early 3-0 lead when Begnoche's home run plated Tice and Valley in the first inning. Elderton and Tice each notched RBIs in the fifth frame to increase the visitors' advantage to 5-0 before Lagasse's homer in the bottom of the inning made the score 5-1. Elderton had an RBI double in the seventh before coming around to score on Buteau's home run to left center. Valley tripled to score Wild later in the inning to extend the Saint Michael's lead to 10-1.
Begnoche belted a solo home run in the eighth, and junior Corey Livingston (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) scored Wild on a sac fly to center field in the ninth. The Purple Knights' 13th run came on Nelson's RBI single in the ninth frame.
Saint Michael's returns to play on Friday when it faces regionally-ranked Bentley University in a road match-up at 3:30 p.m. before playing a doubleheader against the Falcons on Saturday.
