MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team split a pair of seven-inning contests at Middlebury College on Tuesday, winning 7-1 in the opener and falling 7-0 in the nightcap at Forbes Field. The Purple Knights are 11-23, while the Panthers moved to 9-14.

Junior Alex Tice (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple in the opener, sophomore Nicky Elderton (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a stolen base, and first-year Matt Feeney (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) was 2-for-4 with two runs. Senior Jacob Begnoche (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a double and a walk, and junior Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) drove in two runs. In his first college start, first-year Byron Brocar (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) earned the victory after scattering five hits in five innings and allowing one run. Classmate John Mielke (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) allowed one hit during a pair of scoreless innings of relief.

Senior Tom Rafferty (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) had two hits and an RBI for Middlebury, while junior Dylan Kane (Sands Point, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) took the loss after allowing six runs - three earned - on nine hits in five innings.

Rafferty's two-out RBI knock in the first inning put the hosts ahead, but Brocar escaped a two-on situation before Tice ripped a key two-out, two-run single during a four-run second inning. Wild RBIs in the third and fifth innings added to the lead, and Begnoche's two-out RBI double padded the lead in the sixth.

Tice and sophomore Danny Caddigan (Clarksville, Md./River Hill/Mary Washington) each had a hit for the Purple Knights in game two, while junior Corey Livingston (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) drew a walk and stole a base. First-year Jackson Morgan (Montreal, Quebec/Lower Canada College) allowed all seven runs during 3.2 innings, and Caddigan tossed a pair of shutout innings in relief.

Sophomore Hunter Merryman (San Marino, Calif./Polytechnic) went 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a double for the Panthers, and classmate Dylan Sinnickson (Sands Point, N.Y./Hotchkiss School) was 2-for-4 with two runs. Sophomore Noah Bakker (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield) spun the two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one.

First-year Max Araya's (Redding, Conn./Fairfield Prep) two-out, two-run triple broke a scoreless tie in the second inning, and Merryman's two-run double began a four-run third frame. A two-out run came home in the fourth.

The Purple Knights jump back into Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Saint Anselm College.
