Colchester, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (15-19) split a doubleheader with Plattsburgh State University (Vt.) (23-15, 7-5 SUNYAC), dropping the first game, 9-4, and winning the second game, 6-4, Wednesday afternoon on Doc Jacobs Field on Senior Day.
In game one, the Cardinals used four pitchers and a five-run first inning to come away with the 9-4 victory. The five-run first was highlighted by junior Andrew Baio's (Staten Island, N.Y./College of Staten Island) RBI double.
For Plattsburgh, graduate student Kyle Kowalowski (Saranac, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while junior Matt Burns (Ellenville, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Freshman Pat Shaughnessy (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and freshman Kris Cauchon (Colchester, Vt.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Matt O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) earned the win, giving up one earned run on one hit in two innings.
For Saint Michael's, junior Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while classmate Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kents Hill School) finished 2-for-3. Seniors Ryan Reather (Riverton, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) and Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) each drove in a run. Senior Colin Dudunake (Florence, Mass./Suffield Academy) took the loss, giving up five runs in 0.2 innings. Freshman Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) pitched 6.1 innings of relief, giving up four earned runs on five hits while striking out two.
In game two, the Purple Knights put four runs in the bottom of the fourth, while the Cardinals answered right back in the next half inning with four runs of their own. Freshman Pat Lawler's (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and senior Jake Chadwick's (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) RBI single in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference in the Saint Michael's win.
For Saint Michael's, Gil went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Chadwick went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Lawler went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Anthony Bonvechio (Newport, Vt./Southern New Hampshire University) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. Junior Mike Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Babson University) picked up the win, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out one in 2.1 innings of relief.
For Plattsburgh, Kowalowski went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while senior Joe Curcio (Scotia, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Andrew Gooch (Pearland, Texas/Elkins) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Tyler Greene took the loss, giving up two hits and two earned runs in 0.1 inning of relief.
Saint Michael's had five seniors play in their final games as a Purple Knight this afternoon: Gil, Chadwick, Reather, Dudunake, and Julio Patrone (Charlestown, Mass./Roxbury CC).
The Purple Knights' 15 wins this season is the fourth most wins in the program's history.
