COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (11-17) allowed five runs in the top of the ninth inning and fell to the College of Saint Rose, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.
For Saint Rose (16-22), freshman Jesse Burba (Port Chester, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, two runs batted in and a stolen base. Junior Ryan Price (Binghamton, N.Y.) added a double, single and RBI for the winners, while freshman Michael Carbone (Montreal, Quebec) had an RBI double and scored a run. Sophomore Nate Ward (Milton, Vt.) earned the win with four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and four walks while fanning two batters.
For Saint Michael's, freshman Patrick Lawler (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Tim McDonnell (Durham, N.H./Oyster Bay) each singled twice, leading a nine-hit attack. Senior Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) singled and drove in the Purple Knights' lone run, scoring junior Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy), who also singled. Junior Mike McDonough (East Hampton, Conn./Stetson University) suffered the tough-luck loss, as he allowed four runs (two earned) and six hits in 8.1 innings pitched, walking four and striking out four.
Saint Michael's opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Bealieu led off the inning with a single and scored on a groundout by Gil. Saint Rose countered in the top of the fourth inning, as the Golden Knights took advantage of two errors in the frame.
The score remained tied at one until the top of the ninth inning. A walk and a single led off the inning for the Golden Knights, and after both runners advanced on a groundout, Burba gave Saint Rose a 3-1 lead with a two-run single. That hit knocked McDonough out of the game, but Carbone and Price hit consecutive RBI doubles later in the frame to break the game open.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights visit in-state rival Castleton State College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Saint Rose travels to Dominican (N.Y.) College on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
