Baseball Earns Split With Stonehill In Home Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (7-19) earned a split of its doubleheader with regionally-ranked Stonehill College on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights won game one, 9-4, behind a complete game performance from sophomore Mike McDonough (East Hampton, Conn./Stetson Univ.), before Stonehill (20-18) cruised to a 14-0 shutout in the nightcap.

In the opener, McDonough fired an eight-hitter while fanning three batters in a 114-pitch outing to improve to 2-4 on the season. Saint Michael's took the lead for good in a four-run third inning, with freshman Jeff Dukette's (Northfield, Vt./Northfield) two-run triple chasing Stonehill starting pitcher Joey SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.).

Senior Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) singled three times - including hit #100 of his collegiate career - and scored twice to lead the Purple Knights' 13-hit attack, while freshman Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Sophomores Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kents Hill School) both singled twice and scored a run as the hosts played error-free baseball.

For Stonehill, Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) doubled and singled, while Javier Guzman (San Juan, P.R.) singled twice. The Skyhawks stranded 11 runners in the loss.

In game two, the Skyhawks scored seven runs in the first inning to easily earn the split. Eight of Stonehill's starters picked up a base hit in the 16-hit attack, as Davis led the way with three singles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) also went 3-for-5 with a double, two singles and two runs, while Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine) doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in a pair. Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) improved to 3-0 on the season with the complete-game five-hitter, walking one and striking out three.

For Saint Michael's, sophomore Mike Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Senior Alex McIntire (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) pitched three innings of scoreless relief.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. home contest versus Southern Vermont College.
