COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (4-14) saw its two-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday in a 9-5 loss to Middlebury College on Doc Jacobs Field.
For Middlebury (6-9), junior Mark Shimrock (Lansdale, Pa.) singled, doubled, tripled, and scored two runs. Senior Nick Lefeber (Branford, Conn.) tripled and singled twice, driving in two runs, while classmate John Lanahan (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled twice, scored twice, and tallied two RBIs. Senior Christian Hansen (Laramie, Wyom.) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.
For Saint Michael's, senior John Kunkel (Loudonville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and sophomore Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kents Hill School) each doubled, singled, scored a run and drove in a run. Senior Greg McLaughlin (Rutland, Vt./Rutland), junior Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) and sophomore Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) all singled twice, while sophomore Mike Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
Saint Michael's led 4-0 through three innings before Middlebury scored five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. The Panthers increased their lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning, and 9-4 in the top of the seventh inning, chasing Robert. The Purple Knights scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning, and brought the tying runner to the plate that inning, but sophomore Matt Lowes (Houston, Texas) struck out McLaughlin to preserve the four-run margin for Middlebury.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Southern Vermont College, while Middlebury hosts Bates College in a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m..
