COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (3-13) snapped a 12-game losing skid in game two on Monday at Doc Jacobs Field, besting Lyndon State College, 8-4. The Hornets got the best of the Purple Knights in the opener, blanking the hosts, 7-0.
In game one, junior Matthew Picard (Winooski, Vt.) pitched a three-hit shutout, walking four and striking out six. The Hornets broke open a close game with a three-run fourth inning, and the Purple Knights stranded 10 baserunners in the loss. Senior Michael Swan (Southington, Conn.) singled three times for Lyndon State, while sophomore Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kents Hill School) had all three hits for the Purple Knights. Classmate Matt Beauliey (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) took the loss for the Purple Knights.
In the nightcap, Saint Michael's scored eight runs in the first three innings in a game that was halted after 5 1/2 innings due to darkness. Senior Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) has the big hit for the Purple Knights, a three-run triple in the third inning that chased Hornets' starting pitcher Jordan Royer (Lyndonville, Vt.). Classmate Kyle Gingras (Pittsfield, N.H./Pittsfield) pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run, to earn the victory, while sophomore Phil Jennette (Westbury, N.Y./St. Dominic) recorded five outs to pick up the save.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. home contest versus Vermont Technical College.
