Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Amherst Despite Extra Inning Rally

COLCHESTER, Vt.- The Saint Michael's College baseball team (9-24) and the Class of 2008 played their final home game at Doc Jacobs Field Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair to the Lord Jeffs of Amherst College (19-9-1) 11-0 in game one and 7-5 in eight innings in the nightcap. Junior captain Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) extended his hitting streak to seven games, including a single in the seventh as the pinch hitter.

Game One (Amherst 11, Saint Michael's 0):

In his last home game on the mound, senior right-hander Alex McIntire (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) went 5.2 innings and struck out two before Phil Jennette (Westbury, N.Y./Saint Dominic) pitched 1.1 innings of relief. Being held scoreless, seniors Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) and John Kunkel (Loudonville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.) each knocked a base hit in the lop-sided affair.

For the Lord Jeffs, senior right-hander, Chris Edgar (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) went the distance while striking out 11 and walking none. Classmate and catcher Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Saint Xavier) led the Amherst offense, going 3-for-4, driving in five runs, including a two-run blast in the sixth.

Game Two (Amherst 7, Saint Michael's 5 [8 inn]):

In see-saw battle through eight innings, it was the Lord Jeffs driving in a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to seal the doubleheader sweep. Freshman right-hander Max McKenna pitched 4.1 innings of relief to earn the win while allowing three hits and striking out two. Allar struck again with a pair of hits, but junior Angus Schaller's (Leucadia, Calif./San Dieguito) team-leading eighth home run in the top of the seventh catapulted Amherst past the Purple Knights. Senior Evan Bruno (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) also knocked in a pair of runs while going 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

For Saint Michael's, junior Jake Chadwick (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) drove in the game-tying run in the seventh as part of a 2-for-3 afternoon. One batter later, a laser from freshman centerfielder Scott Schaffer (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) gunned down Chadwick at home to save the game for the Lord Jeffs following a line drive from Grenier. Sopohmore right-hander Mike McDonough (East Hampton, Conn./Stetson Univ.) pitched eight innings of courageous baseball, but 13 hits caught up to the Purple Knights who played a game of errorless baseball.

The Purple Knights return to action on Tuesday, April 29 at Vermont Technical College at 4 p.m. for one nine-inning contest.
