NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- In a homecoming doubleheader for junior Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover), the captain catcher went 4-for-8 on the afternoon, batting in three runs in game two to lift the Purple Knights 8-6 past the Warriors. Sophomore pitcher Mike Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Babson) pitched a complete game two, winning his second decision of the year with four strike outs and only one walk.
Game One (Merrimack 10, Saint Michael's 3):
In game one, the Warriors took advantage of four early Purple Knight errors, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Jeff Bercume (Leicester, Mass.) led Merrimack, going 3-for-4 and batting in a trio of runs. Right-hander Mike Coppinger (Medway, Mass.) pitched five innings for the opening winner.
For Saint Michael's, sophomore Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) took the loss in game one through 4.2 innings pitched. Freshman Jeff Dukette (Northfield, Vt./Northfield) went 2-for-3 in game one to help the Purple Knights offense.
Game Two (Saint Michael's 8, Merrimack 6):
Bouncing back for a win in game two, Saint Michael's and the right-hander Robert capitalized on six Warrior errors to steal the nightcap. In addition to three RBIs from Gil, junior Jake Chadwick (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and freshman Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) each knocked in a pair of runs to kick start the Purple Knights offense.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday, April 27 at home against Amherst College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Sunday versus the Lord Jeffs marks the final home game for the eight members of the Class of 2008.
