Baseball Exacts Revenge On Middlebury, 7-6

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.- The Saint Michael's College baseball team (5-14) avenged a loss less than a week ago, 9-5, to Middlebury with a 7-6 victory Tuesday on Forbes Field. The Purple Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Middlebury battled back to tie the game at six before the Purple Knights won it with a run in the ninth. Leading 1-0, Saint Michael's plated three runs on three hits in the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage. A two-run triple to right center by sophomore Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) sparked the inning for the Purple Knights. Saint Michael's added a pair in the fifth with an RBI single by Beaulieu and a SAC fly from freshman Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) to make it a 6-0 game.

Middlebury got on the board in the sixth with four runs on a pair of hits. A bases loaded walk by Erich Enns and a SAC fly to right by Dave Miranowski drove in two of the four runs.

The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs on three hits, leaving the bases loaded. Miranowski single to left to score Peter Bourdon, while Nick Lefeber's double to left drove in Enns to tie the game at 6-6.

Saint Michael's scored an unearned run in the ninth, as Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kent Hill School) reached on an error and later scored on a triple to right center by Beaulieu. Middlebury had a runner reach second base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not get the equalizer.

Freshman Mike McDonough (East Hampton, Conn./Stetson Univ.) picked up the win in relief for St. Michael's, while Colin Dudunake (Florence, Mass./Suffield Acad.) earned the save. Scooter Scott suffered the loss in relief for the Panthers, allowing an unearned run over one inning.

Beaulieu went 3-5 with four RBI for St. Michael's, while Greg McLaughlin, Evan Grenier, Matt O'Brien and Pilczak each had a pair of hits. Miranowski ended the day 2-3 with a pair of RBI for the Panthers, while Lefeber doubled.
