Men's Basketball (3-5, 1-5) Wins Lone Contest on Crawford's Overtime Buzzer Beater
The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team won its lone contest last week, a 52-51 overtime affair at Molloy College on Sunday, when sophomore Corey Crawford II (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) buried a three-pointer at the buzzer. With his team trailing 51-49 and 4.9 seconds remaining, Crawford took the inbounds pass under his own hoop, carried to just beyond the arc on the left wing and knocked down his winner.
Sophomore James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) turned in 17 points off the bench, shooting 8-of-17 while adding eight rebounds and two blocks. First-year Greg Grippo (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prep) added eight points and two blocks, sophomore Mike Thompson (Rosedale, N.Y./Christ The King Regional) notched 10 rebounds, senior Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) had nine, and Crawford notched seven. Despite playing 45 minutes, Saint Michael's improved upon a scoring defense that was yielding 57.4 points per contest, good for ninth in the nation and first in the region.
Women's Basketball (2-8, 0-6) Splits Pair During Weekend Trip to New York City Area
The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team went 1-1 last week during a road trip to the New York City area, downing Queens College, 64-57, on Saturday before falling at Dominican College, 60-53, on Sunday. The Purple Knights have suffered five losses this winter by seven points or less.
Against Queens, senior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) recorded her fifth 20-point effort of the year, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting in addition to corralling 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Classmate Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added 13 points and four boards, and junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) notched 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. First-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) tacked on seven points and three steals, and classmate Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) added seven points and four assists.
Junior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) paced Saint Michael's with 14 points at Dominican, shooting 6-for-8 while adding five rebounds and three assists. Adach tallied 13 points and five boards, and Olsen finished with nine points and five steals. Burud also scored nine points and added nine rebounds, Long collected seven boards, and Gaudreau contributed four assists.
