Student Association Athlete of the Week: Steve Thomson

The Student Association and the Athletic Department are continuing the tradition of recognizing an outstanding student-athlete from the campus community as “Athlete of the Week.” If you'd like to nominate a student-athlete, contact Chris Moskal at

First-year Steve Thomson has proven himself a valuable addition to the men’s tennis team. Leaping to the top of the lineup, Thomson has played first doubles in both matches this spring, picking up a victory with senior partner Eric Parziale vs. regionally-ranked Stonehill this past weekend. Thomson and Parziale won the tightly contested match 9-8 with a score of 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

“He has next-level pace on his shots – the ball jumps. He can hang with the big boys in doubles. It’s rare to see a guy at his level primarily a doubles player,” said head coach Kevin Lizzo.

Thomson, from Westport, Conn., played first singles in the season opener vs. Merrimack and second singles vs. Stonehill this past weekend. His big serve and strong net game helped he and Parziale grab the point at first doubles.

Co-captain Kenny Vassallo sees Thomson as an important addition to the team. “To come into a league and a schedule as competitive as ours and win as a freshman is really impressive, especially considering the lack of time he spent hitting with his partner,” Vassallo said.
