COLCHESTER, Vt. - As part of International Walk to School Day, Saint Michael's College student-athletes will be on hand to greet students at Malletts Bay School in Colchester on Wednesday at 8 a.m. as they arrive for the day, helping support the student wellness that the event and the third- through fifth-grade elementary school promote.
Members of the women's basketball, women's lacrosse and softball teams and Saint Michael's mascot Mike The Knight will all be on hand to cheer on the children, some of whom will take their regular walking routes to school, and others who will meet in designated locations near Malletts Bay School and walk in groups with administrators. As part of the event, the elementary school's faculty and staff will award prizes to the students who form the largest team, travel the furthest distance, or create the best poster.
The Purple Knights will be involved in one of more than 3,300 planned International Walk to School Day events around the United States on Wednesday, as the program dates back more than a decade. In 1997, the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago, modeled after the United Kingdom's lead.
