COLCHESTER, Vt. - This week in Saint Michael's College athletics, we saw the women's basketball team have a standout show with two wins, at home against American International (W, 64-54) and on the road at Adelphi (W, 67-62). The swimming and diving team also earned a victory over the Norwich Cadets, as the men won 184-109 and the women commanded a 211-62 final, before being edged at SUNY-Potsdam in a 142-96 loss for the men, and a 131-99 setback for the women. Men's basketball dropped both contests of the week, first against American International (L, 64-57) and then over the weekend at Adelphi (L, 68-48). Both men's and women's hockey struggled to find success over the weekend, as the men fell 4-1 at Babson, followed by a 7-2 setback at UMass Boston. The women were shutout 6-0 against Norwich on Friday before being bested by the Beacons of UMass Boston, 4-2.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (7-11, 5-10 NE-10)
The Purple Knights moved themselves up to a tied 12th-place in the Northeast-10 standings after completing a perfect week of action. On Tuesday, the team hosted American International College in Ross Sports Center, where they put away the Yellow Jackets 64-54. Senior tri-captain Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) netted a team-high 16 points, shooting 4-of-7 3-pointers. Classmate tri-captain Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) contributed another 13 points in the contest while earning seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) added 12 points to the action, sinking 3-of-6 3-pointers.
Saint Michael's continued their success on the road at Adelphi on Saturday, as they rose above the Panthers 67-62. Otey notched a game-high 20 points and earned eight rebounds, while Keller recorded 10 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Junior Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) earned a game-high nine rebounds, while shooting for 17 points in the game. The Purple Knights collectively made 20-of-23 free throws to overcome the Panthers.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Purple Knights swimming and diving team ended their home schedule with a win over Norwich, as the men swam to a 184-109 victory and the women controlled the Cadets for a 211-62 win.
The Purple Knights saw standout performances by many of their athletes in Tuesday's "Senior Day" dual meet. For the men, sophomore Tim McGrath (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) placed first in the mixed 100-yard individual medley, the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, and helped the Purple Knights take the lead in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Classmate Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also collected multiple wins, as he came in first in the 50-yard and 100-yard backstroke events, while playing a part in the first place 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Max O'Brien (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) collected first on both one-meter dives, earning 359.25 total points.
For the women, sophomore Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) dominated the freestyle events, winning first place in the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle races. Senior Lindsey Burgess (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) placed first in the 50-yard and 100-yard butterfly, while sophomore Sam Sweeney (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union) won the 200-yard individual medley and the 1,000-yard freestyle. Freshman Jade Lubeck (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) was successful in the diving events, as she collected a total of 337.05 points to take first place on both dives.
On Saturday, the team was unable to overcome SUNY-Potsdam, as the men were defeated 142-96 and the women faced a 131-99 loss. For the men, Healy placed first in the 100-yard backstroke and played a part for first place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, with help from McGrath, sophomore Nick Franks (Needham, Mass./Needham), and freshman Joe O'Connor (Loudonville, N.Y./The Albany Academy).
For the women, Lubeck once again controlled the diving events, taking first place on both dives with 412.28 points. Sweeney swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard individual medley, while Kelley earned a win in the 100-yard backstroke.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (8-11, 4-11 NE-10)
The Purple Knight men were unable to hold their lead against American International on Tuesday, ending the game with a 64-57 setback. Freshman Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) netted a season-best 16 points while earning seven rebounds. Classmate Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) contributed another 15 points, sinking 3-of-6 3-pointers, while junior co-captain Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
On Saturday, the men suffered their third straight loss in a 68-48 decision to Adelphi. Sophomore Tom Ward (Brighton, England/Saint Francis (N.Y.)) made eight points, as Warech added another eight points against the Panthers. The Purple Knights struggled to sink their shots, as the 48 points stand as the fewest the team has scored in competition this season.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY (3-11-3, 3-8-3 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10)
The Purple Knights dropped both of their contests over the weekend, starting with a 4-1 loss against the Babson Beavers. After the Beavers had taken a 3-0 lead, junior Glenn Belmore (Cornwall, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) scored the one and only goal for the Knights, assisted by senior assistant captain Alex Higgins (Phoenix, Ariz./Kent School) and freshman Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy). Junior netminder Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) set aside 34 shots in the contest, earning double-digit saves in each period.
The following afternoon, the men's team was overcome by UMass Boston in a 7-2 decision. Sophomore Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) netted both goals for the Purple Knights. In the first period, Earle's assists came from classmate Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) and junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers). MacKinnon connected with Earle again in the third period for the Knights' final goal. Freshman Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) stopped 39 shots on goal.
WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY (3-16-1, 1-15-1 ECAC East)
On Friday, the Purple Knight women were shutout by the Norwich Cadets, 6-0. Freshman netminder Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) recorded 26 saves in goal.
The following afternoon, the Purple Knights were able to find the back of the net on a couple plays, but were defeated 4-2 by the Beacons of UMass Boston. After facing three goals in the first period, junior Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) was assisted by freshman Melissa Coughlin (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to put the Purple Knights on the board in the second frame. Junior Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School) followed up in the third period with her first goal of the season, assisted by senior Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth). Junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 32 shots on goal for the Purple Knights.
