COLCHESTER, Vt. - Men's and women's basketball earned their first sweep of the season in Ross Sports Center last Wednesday, as the women defeated the New Haven Chargers 59-44, followed by the men who walked away with a 72-66 win. On Saturday, however, both teams were unable to overcome the Assumption Greyhounds on the road, as the women fell 64-44, followed by a 77-60 loss for the men. Both men's and women's ice hockey faced shutouts on Friday night, as the men lost a 3-0 decision to Trinity College and the women surrendered 4-0 to Manhattanville. The following afternoon, men's ice hockey turned their luck around to defeat Wesleyan University, 3-2 at Cairns Arena, while the women forced extra time on Salve Regina, but were unable to hold on in the 4-3 overtime loss. Swimming and diving split their outcomes on Wednesday against Clarkson, as the women swam away with a 157-79 victory, while the men dropped a 137-93 decision. Skiing placed 10th overall as they hosted the successful Saint Michael's Carnival this past weekend, as many standout skiers were involved in the Purple Knights' positive outcome.
SKIING
Smuggler's Notch and Sleepy Hollow were home to the 2010 Saint Michael's Carnival last weekend, where the Purple Knights placed 10th against top schools such as Harvard, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Bates, Bowdoin, and more.
In Nordic action on Friday, freshman Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) continued his impressive collegiate skiing appearance by leading the Purple Knights with a 16th place finish in the men's 15-kilometer freestyle. Junior Nigel Kinney (Chanhassen, Minn./Eden Prairie) was the second Saint Michael's representative to finish for the men, as he finished in 32nd place. Freshman Julia Saliy (Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia/Vermont Academy) was the first Purple Knight across the line for the women's Nordic team, as she finished 74th in the 10-kilometer freestyle.
On Saturday, the team comprised of Kinney, Delaney, and sophomore Robert Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) earned 17th place in the men's 3-by-3 sprint relay. The trio who placed 25th in the women's sprint relay was Saliy, sophomore Samantha Martell (Saint Albans, Bt./Bellows Free Academy-Saint Albans) and senior Lauren Fereshetian (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area).
In Alpine action at Smuggler's Notch, senior Brad Harden (McConnellsville, N.Y./Northwood School) placed 25th in the giant slalom on Friday before blowing everyone away with an 11th place finish in Saturday's slalom. Also on Saturday, Harden was followed by his sophomore teammates, J.D. Levine (Toronto, Ontario/King's College) who placed 21st, and Nathan Bryant (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) who finished in 24th place. Freshman Gabbi Hall (Truckee, Calif./Forest Charter School) placed 24th in the women's giant slalom on Friday, and finished in 21st place the following afternoon. Sophomore Ashley Langlands (Shelburne, N.H./Gorham Middle) finished in 34th place on day one, followed by a 37th-place finish on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (8-9, 4-9 NE-10)
The Purple Knights experienced their third straight win of the season, as they overcame the New Haven Chargers, 72-66, at Ross Sports Center on Wednesday night. Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) led the team with 14 points, while sophomore Sam Cieplicki (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton (N.H.) School) contributed with 12 points and six rebounds. Freshman Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) shot 6-of-8 from the floor, collecting 12 points. Junior Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) earned 11 points and eight assists, while fellow co-captain, sophomore Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) recorded nine points and eight rebounds.
The team did not fair as well at Assumption on Saturday, as they were defeated by the Greyhounds 77-60. Birr and Warech were significant players on the attack for the Purple Knights, as Warech led with 18 points and eight rebounds and Birr contributed with 14 points.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (5-11, 3-10 NE-10)
The women's basketball team earned a solid win against New Haven on Wednesday, as the Purple Knights put away the Chargers 59-44. Senior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) led in scoring with 13 points, and sunk 7-of-9 free throw attempts, while classmate Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Meghan McCormack (Barrie, Ont./Saint Peter's Secondary School) recorded a career-high 10 rebounds in the contest.
On Saturday, the Purple Knights were unable to hold on to the lead they held in the first half, as they fell behind the Assumption Greyhounds 64-44. Keller led the team again with 16 points, while junior Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) tallied 13 points and five rebounds.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY (3-9-3, 3-6-3 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10)
The Purple Knights faced a 3-0 shutout against Trinity College on Friday at Cairns Arena. Down by two goals after the first period, the Purple Knights were unable to find success in front of the net. In goal, freshman Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) set aside 21 shots.
The following afternoon, the Purple Knights found that success as they netted all three goals in the second period. Senior Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa./N.H. Junior Monarchs/University of Vermont), assisted by junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) and sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints), took advantage on a power play to put the Purple Knights on the board. Minutes later, senior Bryan Brunton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Brooks Bandits) combined with junior Tully LaBelle-Hamer (Fairbanks, Alaska/Alaska Avalanche) to help senior Jean-Maxime Legare (Saint Augustine, Quebec/Restigouche Tigers) earn his first goal of the season, giving the Purple Knights a two goal lead before the Cardinals were able to tally one of their own. Freshman Alex Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School) answered back at the end of the second frame, scoring what came to be the game-winning goal. Contributing the helpers on Davidson's goal were freshman Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors) and senior Kyle Marquis (Richmond, Vt./New England Huskies). Dizgun stopped 31 shots in the ECAC East contest.
WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY (3-14-1, 1-13-1 ECAC East)
Women's ice hockey was unable to make any headway against the 10th-ranked Manhattanville Valiants, as the Purple Knights suffered a 4-0 shutout. Freshman Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Conn. Polar Bears) recorded 38 saves in the contest.
The following night, the Purple Knights gave Salve Regina a run for their money as they were able to force overtime, but fell 5-4 to the Seahawks in extra time. Saint Michael's was continuously catching up in the contest, as senior Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) tied it 1-all early in the second period, assisted by freshman Chrissy Skrzat (Lansdale, Pa./Boston Shamrocks). After two Seahawks' goals, Skrzat and Landis switched roles, as Skrzat earned her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Kiera Nelligan (Melrose, Mass./Arlington Catholic) tied the game at 3-all on an assist from senior Molly DiMasi (Burlington, Vt./Burlington). Skrzat then found the back of the net to create the need for extra time after the Seahawks had tallied a fourth goal. Assisting Skrzat was Landis and junior Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School). Junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 27 shots on goal, but was unable to block the game-winning shot she faced in overtime.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Purple Knights swimming and diving team split their results against Clarkson on Wednesday in the Ross Sports Center Pool, as the women overcame the Golden Knights 157-79, but the men fell short 137-93.
For the men, senior captain Jake Stamas (Andover, Mass./Andover) placed first in both of his one-meter dive events, earning 288.02 total points. Sophomore Tim McGrath (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) swam to first place in the 100-yard breaststroke and played a hand in helping the Purple Knights win the 200-yard medley relay.
For the women, freshman Katie Cox (South Hadley, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) came in first in the 1,000-yard and 500-yard freestyle events, while classmate Jade Lubeck (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) won both of her one-meter dive events. Sophomore Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) swam to first in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle, and classmate Sammy Sweeney (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union) placed first in both 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley.
