COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's basketball teams will show their support for breast cancer awareness on Thursday versus Merrimack College at the Ross Sports Center, as the Purple Knights take part in the "Pink Zone" breast cancer initiative organized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
All fans attending Thursday's "Pink Zone" contests are encouraged to show their support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink to the key conference games, which begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women's contest, and continue at 7:30 p.m. with the men's game. All proceeds from Saint Michael's "Pink Zone" games will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Vermont.
The women's game will feature a halftime contest, where the two students who are best-dressed in pink will receive gift certificates to Domino's. Halftime of the men's game, meanwhile, will feature a Zumba dance session.
With just five regular-season games remaining for Saint Michael's and Merrimack, both games on Thursday have significant playoff implications. On the women's side, Saint Michael's (10-10, 8-9 Northeast-10 Conference) and Merrimack (10-11, 8-9 NE-10) are tied for eighth in the league standings, with the eighth-place team hosting the ninth-place squad in the First Round of the NE-10 Tournament. Both teams are a half-game ahead of 10th-place Southern New Hampshire University, and 1.5 games back of seventh-place Stonehill College.
Meanwhile, the Saint Michael's men (10-11, 8-9 NE-10) have won their last two games, and seven of their last 11 contests, to vault into ninth place in the league standings. Merrimack (11-10, 7-10 NE-10) is in the 12th and final spot in the standings, but can pull even with the Purple Knights with a road win on Thursday.
Thursday's games are the first of two doubleheaders between Saint Michael's and Merrimack in a nine-day span, as the two colleges square off in a twinbill at Merrimack on February 19.
