COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's ice hockey teams will wrap up 2010 and commence 2011 in style over the weekend, as the Purple Knights host the sixth annual Saint Michael's Holiday Classic at Cairns Arena in South Burlington.
The action begins on New Year's Eve (Friday), as the Saint Michael's women host Colby College at 4 p.m.
Three games are on the slate for New Year's Day (Saturday), beginning with the Saint Michael's men, as they drop the puck at 4 p.m. versus Johnson & Wales University. Two games are then scheduled for 7 p.m., as the Castleton State College men take on Morrisville State College on the main rink at Cairns Arena, while the Colby women face Saint Catherine University on Cairns' secondary rink.
The Saint Michael's Holiday Classic concludes on Sunday with three more contests. At 1 p.m., Castleton and Johnson & Wales will square off on the men's side. Then at 4 p.m., both Saint Michael's squads will be in action, with the men squaring off against Morrisville on Rink #1, and the women hosting Saint Catherine on Rink #2.
The gates for all games at the Saint Michael's Holiday Classic will open one hour prior to the day's first contest. Day passes cost $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors age 65 and over, and $1 for children under 12 years of age.
Three of this weekend's games can be seen live over the Internet by visiting www.fasthockey.com. Those games are: Friday's Saint Michael's-Colby women's contest, Saturday's Saint Michael's-Johnson & Wales men's game, and Sunday's Saint Michael's-Morrisville men's contest.
The Saint Michael's women (2-8-1) seek their second straight Holiday Classic championship, as the Purple Knights bested Colby and Plymouth State University last season to win their first Holiday Classic title. The Purple Knights have won three of their last four games at the tournament, but are 0-5-0 at home this season.
The Saint Michael's men (4-3-0) tuned up for this weekend's action with a 3-2 exhibition victory versus the United States National University Team on Tuesday. The Purple Knights are 4-5-1 all-time at their annual tournament, including a championship in the 2007-08 season, but Saint Michael's is winless at the Holiday Classic each of the last two seasons.
On the women's side, Colby (2-6-0), out of Waterville, Maine, enters the tournament on a four-game losing skid, and has played in the Holiday Classic all six seasons, winning the title in the 2008-09 season. Saint Catherine (5-3-1), located in Saint Paul, Minn., and a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, has not played in New England since the 2007-08 season.
For the men, in-state rival Castleton (6-2-0) is ranked 14th in the latest USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, and enters the tournament on a two-game winning streak, with both victories overtime contests. Johnson & Wales (5-4-1), located in Newport, R.I. and an ECAC Northeast member, earned a 10-2 win at Southern New Hampshire University in its last game on Dec. 16. Morrisville State (5-3-1), a member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, defeated Saint Michael's 5-1 at last year's Holiday Classic, and hasn't played since Dec. 4.
